Iran

Communiqué issued by the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs
Paris, August 4, 2008

Following the meeting between Mr. Javier Solana and the Iranian negotiator, Mr. Saeed Jalili, France expresses its disappointment at the absence of a clear response from Iran to the Six’s proposal of a “freeze for freeze” in order to launch negotiations, expected within two weeks of the meeting of July 19 in Geneva.

France understands that a written document is scheduled to reach Mr. Solana tomorrow, August 5,, and hopes this document will provide the response the international community is waiting for.

Like its Six partners, France is committed to a dual approach combining firmness on the one hand and openness to dialogue on the other, as shown by our most recent efforts to get the negotiations going, despite the expiry of the three-month period the Security Council gave Iran on March 3 this year to comply with the provisions of UNSCR 1803 and Iran’s failure to do so. If there is no positive response to the Six’s offer, then Iran will have to face new sanctions./.
