Tropical Storm Gustav
Washington, August 28, 2008
Tropical Storm Gustav may reach the Louisiana coast on September 1 or 2. By then it could become a Category 2 or 3 hurricane (Category 5 being the most deadly). Strong winds and local flooding could result, with New Orleans also being affected.
Visitors should avoid all travel to the southern part of the state,
including New Orleans and Baton Rouge, between August 31 and September 2.
They should also heed the advisories and instructions of local authorities, who are not ruling out the evacuation of high-risk areas this weekend. At this stage, residents of coastal areas are being asked to make preparations (stocking up on provisions, filling their gas tanks, boarding up windows, etc.). French residents or travelers should keep informed of the safety advisories issued by the local authorities:
Television: Channels 4, 6 and 8
Radio: 870 AM for emergencies
Internet: www.nola.com, the Times Picayune website, updated with evacuation routes.
They should dial 311 if they require transportation in order to evacuate.
