STATEMENT BY THE MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AND EUROPEAN AFFAIRS SPOKESPERSON

Paris, September 16, 2008

IAEA DIRECTOR GENERAL’S REPORT

France thanks the director general of the IAEA and his staff for this report, which attests to the Agency’s efforts to shed light on Iran’s nuclear activities.

Unfortunately, the IAEA’s director general notes once again that Iran is refusing to provide answers to the IAEA’s questions on activities that could be linked to the design and manufacture of nuclear weapons.

At the same time, the report stresses that Iran is continuing its enrichment activities as well as those linked to reprocessing and heavy water, in violation of UN Security Council resolutions 1696, 1737, 1747 and 1803.

The Six continued their efforts this summer to convince Iran to engage in a negotiation process. The Six presented a revised offer and proposed opening a six-week period to prepare for the suspension of sensitive activities and negotiations. Iran once again rejected these overtures.

In line with the approach of the Six, combining dialogue and firmness, we have no other choice but to work, in the coming days and weeks, on a new Security Council sanctions resolution.
