COMMUNIQUÉ ISSUED BY THE MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AND EUROPEAN AFFAIRS
Paris, February 2, 2009

France welcomes India’s signature of its new safeguards agreement with the IAEA. It is a very positive sign of India’s determination to honor the commitments it undertook with respect to the international community and which paved the way for the waiver issued by the Nuclear Supplier Group (NSG) last September.

The signing of this agreement will make it possible to place under safeguards a growing number of plants devoted to exclusively peaceful uses. It represents a concrete example of the major progress made by the nonproliferation regime, to which France is particularly attached.

The implementation of this agreement will make it possible to develop new cooperative projects with India in the civilian nuclear sector. France welcomes the partnerships that can now be concretized between French and Indian entities./.
