Appointment of General Stéphane Abrial to the post of Supreme Allied Commander Transformation – Communiqué issued by the Presidency of the Republic
Paris, July 29, 2009

President Sarkozy welcomes the North Atlantic Council’s decision, today, to appoint, on the proposal of France, General Stéphane Abrial to the post of Supreme Allied Commander Transformation.

This appointment, after that of General Philippe Stolz to the post of Commander Allied Joint Command Lisbon [responsible inter alia for NATO’S Rapid Reaction Force] on 20 July, confirms the strengthening of Europe’s role in the Alliance, which was at the heart of France’s decision to resume her full place in NATO’s command structure.

General Abrial, currently Chief of Staff of the French Air Force, will take up his new duties on 9 September 2009 at a change of command ceremony to be held at Headquarters Supreme Allied Command Transformation in Norfolk in the United States./.
