Communiqué issued by the Presidency of the Republic
Paris, February 9 2010

President Sarkozy was very shocked to learn of the death of a French soldier from the Chambéry 13th Chasseurs Alpins [mountain light infantry] battalion. The soldier was helping protect an Afghan National Army logistics convoy in Kapisa, at the southern entrance to the Alasay Valley. During the operation, French troops were attacked by insurgents. One French soldier was fatally wounded.

This soldier paid with his life for France’s commitment to help bring peace and security to the Afghan people.

President Sarkozy expresses his most sincere condolences to the bereaved and shares their pain.

His thoughts also go to their comrades-in-arms.

The Head of State reaffirmed his support for the Afghan people and authorities. He forcefully condemned the mindless violence and expressed France’s determination to continue working within the International Security Assistance Force. This UN-mandated force has been assigned the mission of contributing to the re-establishment of stability, restoration of peace and to development in Afghanistan./.
