US tanker aircraft contract
Paris, March 16, 2010
The German Chancellor and President Sarkozy are concerned about the circumstances which have led the US Northrop Grumman group and its European partner EADS to pull out of the competition for the contract for the future US Air Force refuelling planes, after becoming convinced that the call for tenders issued by the US authorities favoured Boeing.
Our two countries draw attention to the fact that in 2009 the US Air Force had opted for the aircraft proposed by Northrop Grumman and EADS, after a first cancellation by the American Congress of the award of the contract to Boeing.
The Chancellor and President Sarkozy declare that transatlantic economic relations must be based on open markets and fair competition, and reject protectionist temptations, including in the field of defense where every year European Union countries buy three times more equipment from the United States than they sell to it.
The Chancellor and President Sarkozy, in cooperation with the European Commission and their European partners concerned, will consider the implications of future developments in this matter./.
