Sudan/re-election of President al-Bashir – Statement by Bernard Valéro, Foreign and European Affairs Ministry Spokesman
Paris, April 27, 2010

France takes formal note of the Sudanese Electoral Commission’s declaration of the result of the general election. As the European Union Observation Mission observed in its preliminary report, this election, marred by many irregularities, does not meet international standards.

Despite these irregularities, with the general election Sudan has reached an essential milestone in implementing the Comprehensive Peace Agreement signed in 2005, guarantee of stability and peace in Sudan and the region. The priority now reverts to preparing the 2011 referenda for Abyei and South Sudan and holding elections in the States of South Kordofan and the Blue Nile. France calls on both parties to the Peace Agreement to step up their efforts to prepare for them.

France also hopes that these elections will in the future contribute to Sudan’s democratic transformation process, in accordance with the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, and calls on the authorities and all the Sudanese political players to pursue their efforts to achieve greater democratic openness.

France remains fully committed to maintenance of stability and peace in Sudan and the region and will pursue her efforts to help the parties implement the Comprehensive Peace Agreement. She maintains her support for the peace process in Darfur and political negotiations under way under the auspices of the joint United Nations and African Union Mediator and the State of Qatar. Like her European Union partners France reiterates her full support for the action of the International Criminal Court in Sudan./.
