Paris, April 25, 2010

Today, Sunday, 25 April, President Sarkozy spoke on the telephone to Mr Saad Hariri, Prime Minister of Lebanon.

President Sarkozy reaffirmed to Mr Hariri France’s full support for the Lebanese authorities and people. France, a friend of Lebanon and all the Lebanese, supports the national unity government’s action and the reform effort it is carrying out to modernize and take forward a united, sovereign Lebanon.

President Sarkozy also talked to the Lebanese Prime Minister about all aspects of the regional situation. He expressed his desire to see the deadlock affecting all tracks of the Middle East Peace Process broken, and underlined France’s commitment in this respect.

The Head of State also signalled his concern at the growing tension in the region. In this respect, he stressed, it is crucial for everyone to demonstrate responsibility and refrain from action likely to fuel or increase this tension and affect regional stability.

Reiterating France’s constant support for Lebanon, particularly through three economic and financial conferences and a continuous commitment in UNIFIL, President Sarkozy told Prime Minister Hariri that France stood side by side with Lebanon and the Lebanese./.
