2018 Olympic Games
President Sarkozy has just learned of the IOC’s announcement in Lausanne of the City of Annecy’s upgrade from Applicant to Candidate City for organizing the 2018 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.
This is an important milestone and President Sarkozy congratulates the three cities which are now candidates: Munich (Germany), PyeongChang (South Korea) and Annecy. He renews his strong encouragement to the whole French team responsible for this project to unite behind it and, taking into account the IOC’s observations and recommendations, work even harder, with an unfailing belief in the success of France’s candidature until the final decision on the choice of the organizing city and country is made in Durban on 6 July 2011.
Our country has successfully demonstrated its ability to organize international sporting events such as, recently, the Rugby World Cup in 2007 and Alpine World Ski Championships in Val d’Isère in 2009. The organization in France of major international sporting events is a priority for President Sarkozy. Accordingly, the Head of State himself went to Geneva on Friday, 28 May to argue in favour of France’s candidature for Euro 2016.
President Sarkozy has reiterated that he personally, together with the whole government and State services, is supporting Annecy’s bid to the IOC to host Games championed by sportsmen and women to pave the way to the mountains of the 21st century, inspired by Olympic values and ideals./.
