UNIFIL/Lebanon/adoption of UNSCR 1937
France welcomes the unanimous adoption by the Security Council of UNSCR 1937 which renews the mandate of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) for one year. This force is playing a decisive role with respect to Lebanon’s stability and to maintaining the cessation of hostilities with Israel, in the framework of the missions assigned to it under UNSCR 1701 (2006).
This resolution strongly and unambiguously reaffirms the need for the parties to respect the principle of UNIFIL’s freedom of movement which is an essential condition for its action. It renews the appeal to the Lebanese government to strengthen the presence of the Lebanese army in southern Lebanon.
Furthermore, it sends clear messages regarding the withdrawal of the Israeli army from the northern part of the village of Ghajar, the parties’ strict respect of the Blue Line, the call to accelerate the visible marking of the Blue Line, and the obligation to comply with the arms embargo in southern Lebanon provided for by UNSCR 1701.
We reaffirm our full support for UNIFIL which is carrying out its mandate with determination and thus contributing to peace in the region and Lebanon’s independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and stability in accordance with the Security Council resolutions, in particular UNSCR 1701.
France, with almost 1,500 soldiers, remains fully engaged in UNIFIL./.
