Paris, 19 October 2010
The Minister of State responsible for European Affairs notes with satisfaction the Commission’s decision to abandon the prospect of launching proceedings against France over the Roma issue.
With the Commission’s decision taken, efforts must now move to dealing with the real issues: integrating the Roma in their countries of origin and fighting the trafficking of which these people are the first victims.
It is for this purpose that Pierre Lellouche will represent France tomorrow at the high-level meeting on the integration of the Roma organized in Strasbourg by the Council of Europe. Announced on 17 September during the visit to Paris by Thorbjørn Jagland, Secretary General of the Council of Europe, this meeting must provide us with the opportunity to confirm the commitment of the 47 Council of Europe Member States to the social integration of the Roma in the countries of which they are nationals./.
