Announcement of the building of 625 additional homes in the Pisgat Ze’ev settlement in East Jerusalem – Statement by the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs Spokesman
Paris, December 2, 2010

At a time when courageous, responsible decisions likely to establish a climate of trust between the parties are expected, France strongly deplores the Israeli authorities’ continuation of the plan to build 625 additional homes in the Pisgat Ze’ev settlement in East Jerusalem, as well as the recent evictions and destruction of houses in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Settlement building is illegal under international law, contrary to Israel’s international commitments and harmful to the peace efforts.

As the Ministre d’Etat reiterated yesterday in the National Assembly, France deplores the fact that the unanimous appeals for extending the Israeli moratorium on settlement building have still not been heeded. We call on the Israeli authorities to reconsider this decision./.
