International Human Rights Day

Statement by Michèle Alliot-Marie, Ministre d’Etat, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs
Paris, December 10, 2010

For 60 years, International Human Rights Day has provided an opportunity to reaffirm our values. It is also the opportunity to take stock of the human rights situation in the world and gauge how far there is left to go to ensure that fundamental freedoms are respected in every country.

This year it is dedicated particularly to the defenders of these rights.
France has always been committed to defending and promoting these values, which form the basis of her national unity and which are today also those of the European Union.

Promoting human rights will continue to be one of the major focuses of our foreign policy.

On this day when the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded, I renew France’s appeal for the release of all those, throughout the world, who are deprived of freedom for defending human rights. I also pay tribute to the memory of those who have lost their lives in this battle./.
