Situation in Egypt

President Sarkozy hails the historic moment Egypt is experiencing.
After several weeks during which the Egyptian people expressed their desire for change forcefully and with dignity, President Mubarak has decided to step down as President of the Arab Republic of Egypt.
France pays tribute to this courageous and necessary decision.
She ardently hopes that the new Egyptian authorities will take steps leading to the establishment of democratic institutions through fair and transparent elections.
France encourages the Egyptian leaders to proceed as swiftly as possible with the reforms that will turn Egypt into a free and pluralistic society and will enable that great country and friend of France to play its full role in the world in the service of peace.
France urges all Egyptians to pursue without violence their march toward freedom, which she supports with friendship, and to which she stands ready to offer her full assistance./.
