Syria/crackdown on demonstrations – Statement by the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs Deputy Spokesman
Paris, April 11, 2011

France forcefully condemns the violence which, once again, has recently left more than 20 people dead and many others injured in several Syrian cities, particularly Deraa. This violence is unacceptable.

She deplores the continued arrests and intimidation of journalists, which are also unacceptable.

France urges the Syrian authorities to refrain immediately from using force against the demonstrators, and to implement without delay a programme of reforms that responds to the aspirations of the people. Reform and repression are incompatible.

France calls for the release of all prisoners of conscience, particularly those jailed for taking part in the demonstrations.

The swift introduction of effective political reforms, particularly the lifting of the state of emergency, is the only way to respond to the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people and thus contribute to the country’s stability, which is in everyone’s interest./.
