France condemns the extreme violence carried out by the Syrian security forces, which killed many peaceful demonstrators on 22 April. Those responsible for these crimes, and their perpetrators, will have to answer for their acts.
This indiscriminate, brutal crackdown is at variance with the lifting of the state of emergency.
We urge the Syrian authorities to renounce the use of violence and respect their citizens’ fundamental rights and freedoms in accordance with their international commitments, particularly the right to peaceful demonstration and freedom of the press.
Only inclusive political dialogue and reforms addressing the Syrian people’s legitimate aspirations can enable the country’s stability to be preserved, which is in everyone’s interest./.
