Afghanistan/death of a French soldier

President Sarkozy was very shocked to learn, late this morning, of the death of a 1st-Class soldier from the 13th Engineers Regiment. During an operation in Kapisa, while on a reconnaissance mission, he was killed by a blast from an Improvised Explosive Device.

The Head of State extends his most sincere condolences to the soldier’s family and close friends and shares their grief.

He reaffirms his support for the Afghan people and authorities. He expresses France’s determination to go on working within the International Security Assistance Force. This UN-mandated force has been assigned the mission of contributing to the re-establishment of stability, restoration of peace and to development in Afghanistan./.
