France/US/Arab Spring/Middle East
Paris, May 20, 2011
I salute President Obama’s speech on the revolutions in the Arab world.
The message of the United States President echoes France’s message.
The Arab Spring inspires immense hope, which it is in our interest unstintingly to support. Any crackdown is unacceptable and the international community must face up to its responsibilities to ensure that dialogue prevails over force.
On the Israeli-Palestinian issue, I welcome the fact that our two countries’ analyses are much the same: the status quo is untenable. The solution has to include a resumption of the negotiations, whose essential parameters we know – in particular, as President Obama highlighted, a guarantee of Israel’s security, and negotiations based on the 1967 lines with mutually agreed land swaps.
France will spare no effort in helping to restart the dialogue. It is with this in mind that I’ll be visiting the Middle East and the United States in the next few days./.
