Union for the Mediterranean
Paris, May 25, 2011
I very warmly welcome the appointment, by the senior officials of the Union for the Mediterranean meeting in Barcelona, of Youssef Amrani to the post of Secretary-General. This appointment is excellent news for the Union for the Mediterranean and the development of Euro-Mediterranean projects.
We’re looking to M. Amrani to implement cooperation projects capable of supporting the reforms and movements under way south of the Mediterranean. Particular attention must be paid to several sectors: young people – through the planned Mediterranean Office for Youth, among other things – civil society, economic development, renewable energy and civil protection.
I wish M. Amrani every success in carrying out his new duties, and we’re looking forward to working with him. A perfect speaker of French and Spanish, among other things, he has had a brilliant diplomatic career, acquiring particular experience in the field of Euro-Mediterranean relations. His duties as Secretary-General of the of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of the Kingdom of Morocco, which he has carried out successfully since 2008, are also proof of his ability to take charge of the workings of the institution he is entrusted with today, which is essential to the success of the UfM.
France commends the work done by the Senior Deputy Secretary-General, Mr Lino Cardarelli, who has carried out the duties of the Secretary-General on an interim basis since March./.
