President Sarkozy was deeply saddened to learn this morning of the death of five French soldiers and one Afghan civilian who were cravenly assassinated in Kapisa.

President Sarkozy was deeply saddened to learn this morning of the death of five French soldiers and one Afghan civilian who were cravenly assassinated in Kapisa. The French soldiers were helping protect a shura [assembly of elders] in Joybar, in the Tagab Valley. A terrorist set off a bomb near the French soldiers, seriously injuring another four French soldiers and three Afghan civilians.

President Sarkozy offers his most sincere condolences to the bereaved and shares their grief. He wishes the injured a speedy recovery.

Upon his return from his visit to Afghanistan, during which he reaffirmed his support for the Afghan people and Afghan authorities, the Head of State expressed France’s determination to continue working within the International Security Assistance Force to restore peace and stability in the country and contribute to its development.
