In the framework of the French G20 presidency, Bruno Le Maire, Minister for Agriculture, Food, Fisheries, Rural Affairs and Town and Country Planning, will visit Kenya on 23 and 24 July 2011 to meet the Kenyan authorities and international agencies and take stock of the food and nutrition crisis in the Horn of Africa.

Along with Josette Sheeran, Executive Director of the World Food Programme (WFP), the Minister will make a detailed appraisal of the situation on the ground.

Bruno Le Maire will then go to the extraordinary meeting of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) devoted to the food crisis in the region, which will be held in Rome on Monday, 25 July.

This meeting follows the letter of 15 July from Alain Juppé, Ministre d’Etat, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Bruno Le Maire and Henri de Raincourt, Minister responsible for Cooperation, to FAO Director-General Jacques Diouf. Bruno Le Maire had also had a meeting with Jacques Diouf on 13 July to discuss the situation in East Africa.

On 23 June 2011, the G20 agriculture ministers, meeting on the French G20 presidency’s initiative, adopted the Action Plan on Food Price Volatility and Agriculture. This plan provides for stronger international coordination to ensure food security./.
