Syria– Adoption of a Presidential Statement by the Security Council
Paris, August 3, 2011
I welcome the UN Security Council’s unanimous adoption of a statement on Syria this evening in New York.
The Council is sending an unambiguous message to Damascus. It strongly condemns the Syrian regime for human rights violations and the use of force against civilians. It emphasizes that those responsible for the violence must be held accountable. The Council will meet again in one week to reexamine the situation.
This text is the product of the efforts we have made with our partners since the beginning of the events in Syria. It is a turning point in the international community’s attitude.
