Euro Area/Greek referendum
Paris, November 1, 2011
The Greek Prime Minister yesterday took the initiative of announcing a referendum. This announcement surprised everyone in Europe.
France would like to repeat that the plan unanimously adopted last Thursday by the 17 Euro Area states is the only possible route for resolving the Greek debt problem.
Giving the people a voice is always legitimate, but there can be no solidarity between all the Euro Area countries unless they each agree to make the necessary efforts.
France and Germany have therefore taken the initiative of convening a meeting of all the European institutions and the International Monetary Fund tomorrow, before the opening of the G20 summit, to examine with the Greek Prime Minister the conditions in which the commitments made will be honoured./.
