Adoption of UNSCR 2018 on the fight against piracy in the Gulf of Guinea
Paris, November 2, 2011
France welcomes the adoption by the Security Council of UNSCR 2018 on the fight against armed robbery and piracy in the Gulf of Guinea.
The Security Council reaffirms the primary responsibility of the states of the region in this effort and encourages them, as well as the regional organizations concerned (ECOWAS, ECCAS, Gulf of Guinea Commission) to strengthen their coordination in this area in order to prevent the situation from deteriorating. It supports the organization of a regional conference on this topic in order to define a comprehensive, collective strategy.
France, who co-sponsored this resolution, supports measures to improve the regional response to combat piracy and armed robbery in the Gulf of Guinea. Among other things, since September 2011 she has dedicated a Priority Solidarity Fund (FSP) to strengthening maritime security capabilities in Benin, Ghana and Togo. The French navy is also conducting instruction and training activities in the region.
France supports the European Union’s ongoing maritime security initiatives in the Gulf of Guinea and encourages it to continue its efforts to strengthen the maritime capabilities of the states of the region./.
