Letter of congratulations from Nicolas Sarkozy, President of the Republic, to Mario Monti, Prime Minister of Italy
Paris, November 16, 2011

Dear Prime Minister,

I wish to congratulate you most sincerely on your appointment as head of the Italian government and want to assure you that France is utterly determined to cooperate closely with the government you are leading.

The French know your commitment to Europe and highly respect the work you did as a commissioner in Brussels to stimulate the internal market and European growth. They know your determination and value the contribution you made to thinking about France’s modernization in the framework of the Commission chaired by Jacques Attali.

The coming weeks will be decisive. Together we shall succeed. I am convinced that Italy’s implementation of the new measures on top of the plans already adopted will allow her to find the path of stability and growth, in an atmosphere of trust.

I passionately wish you every success in your important mission.

(complimentary close, with handwritten addition)./.
