Syria/report by the Human Rights Council’s Commission of Inquiry – Statement by Alain Juppé, Ministre d’Etat, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs
Paris, November 28, 2011

France commends the quality and professionalism of the work carried out by the Human Rights Council’s Commission of Inquiry despite the systematic obstruction by the Syrian regime.

The report just released by the Commission today in Geneva is damning.

The Commission was able to gather numerous accounts reflecting the extreme seriousness of the human rights violations committed in Syria for months now: extrajudicial executions, enforced disappearances, arbitrary detentions, widespread use of torture and heinous crimes against women and children.

All these atrocities constitute genuine crimes against humanity committed by the Syrian regime against its people. In light of these findings, France urges the Human Rights Council to meet, condemn these violations and demand that they cease.

The international community must mobilize its efforts. More than ever, it has a duty to demonstrate its active solidarity given the suffering of the civilian population.

France is determined to continue her efforts to put an end to these crimes./.
