Turkey/sanctions against Syria
Paris, December 1, 2011
France welcomes the new sanctions announced on 30 November by Turkey in response to the human rights violations perpetrated by the Syrian regime. We commend the Turkish authorities’ determination.
These efforts are in line with those of the Arab League, which on 27 November confirmed the implementation of sanctions against Bashar al-Assad’s regime, and with those of the European Union, which will now strengthen its sanctions mechanism, targeting in particular the financial, banking and energy sectors, as well as individuals and entities linked to the crackdown.
These measures confirm the Syrian regime’s increasing isolation and the consensus within the international community that the crackdown in Syria must come to end. This mobilization was shown on 22 November by the adoption by a very large majority at the United Nations General Assembly of a resolution condemning the human rights situation in Syria.
France is working closely with all her partners with a view to strengthening the effectiveness of the sanctions imposed against the Syrian regime./.
