International Group Calls on Iran to Halt Nuclear Development

Paris, March 6, 2012

Mrs Ashton, the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, has today, on behalf of the E3+3 group (France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States, Russia and China), suggested to Iran that she resume talks on the nuclear issue at a time and place to be mutually agreed as soon as possible.

Her letter – which the Six closely cooperated in drawing up – is addressed to the Iranian negotiator, Mr Jalili. The E3+3 are united in stressing the importance of focusing the talks on the concerns raised by the Iranian nuclear programme.

Mrs Ashton recalls the Six’s willingness to consider a phase of rebuilding trust, leading to a full settlement involving Iran’s comprehensive fulfilment of her obligations under the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council and the IAEA Board of Governors.

The Six reiterate the importance of Iran engaging seriously in this process without setting preconditions, in order to avoid a repeat of the experience of the fruitless Istanbul talks in January 2011.

France calls on Iran to seize this opportunity being offered to her to emerge from the international isolation into which her nuclear programme with military ends has led her. We invite her to work jointly with us towards a swift diplomatic settlement of the crisis sparked by her pursuit of sensitive nuclear activities in violation of her international obligations, as again recalled by the IAEA’s latest report./.
