Statement by M. François Hollande, President of the Republic
Paris, August 7, 2012

I was very shocked to learn of the death this morning of a French NCO from the Chambéry 13th Chasseurs Alpins [mountain light infantry] battalion during an Afghan army operation in Kapisa Province. He was part of an assistance team which advises the Afghan units. Another soldier, also wounded, is out of danger.

Our troops, engaged in defending the democratic transition in Afghanistan, have once again been targeted in this tragic event.

My thoughts go to the victim’s family, to whom I extend my sincere condolences and express my support on France’s behalf.

I also wish the wounded soldier a speedy recovery.

I salute the courage and dedication of the French troops in Afghanistan, who work every day for peace and stability in that country.

The withdrawal of our combat forces has begun and will be completed, as scheduled, at the end of this year./.
