Publié le February 4, 2013
Statement by French Foreign Ministry Spokesman Philippe Lalliot.
Paris, February 4, 2013.

Laurent Fabius has just spoken with John Kerry. The French Foreign Minster offered his congratulations to his American counterpart a few days after Mr. Kerry’s confirmation by the U.S. Senate.

The two ministers discussed the most important international issues of the day. Mr. Fabius, who traveled to Mali on Saturday with President Hollande, thanked Mr. Kerry for the United States’ important support for France’s intervention in support of the Malian army and African forces in their fight against terrorist groups, and for the restoration of Mali’s territorial integrity.

They also underscored the urgent need for a political transition in Syria, including the departure of Bashar al-Assad and the country’s transformation into a democracy that respects human rights, as demanded by the Syrian National Coalition. In addition, they discussed the Middle East peace process.

Finally, Mr. Fabius and Mr. Kerry agreed on the urgent need to join forces to meet the challenges linked to climate change.

They agreed to meet very soon to discuss priority international issues and to further strengthen transatlantic ties and French-American relations.
