Meeting between M. Thierry Repentin and his Turkish counterpart, Mr Egemen Bağış

M. Thierry Repentin, Minister Delegate for European Affairs, had a meeting this morning with Mr Egemen Bağış, Turkey’s Minister of European Affairs.

M. Repentin and his Turkish counterpart talked about the negotiation process between the European Union and Turkey and the prospect of the forthcoming opening of Chapter 22 on regional policy, after France unblocked this chapter, a decision appreciated by Turkey.

The Minister Delegate discussed France and the European Union’s expectations about the pursuit of reforms in Turkey, particularly in the area of illegal immigration control, and about the Cyprus issue.

The domestic situation in Turkey was also discussed at the meeting. The Minister Delegate reiterated France’s call for dialogue, restraint and calm.

The two ministers also discussed the development of Franco-Turkish bilateral relations, which have notably improved over the past year and which France would like to be in keeping with the strategic importance of relations between our two countries.

Finally, Mr Bağış invited M. Repentin to pay a visit to Turkey in the near future. (…)./.
