Communiqué issued by the Presidency of the Republic
Paris, August 15, 2013

The President summoned the Egyptian Ambassador in order for him to convey to his authorities France’s very great concern about the tragic events occurring in his country.

He utterly condemned the bloody violence in Egypt and called for an immediate halt to the crackdown. The right to demonstrate peacefully must be respected. It is obviously incumbent on the demonstrators, in return, to behave in a peaceful manner. He emphasized that the state of emergency had to be lifted swiftly.

The Head of State affirmed that everything must be done to avoid civil war. The release of prisoners, with due regard for judicial proceedings under way, could be a first step towards the resumption of talks.

France is committed to the quest for a political solution and would like elections to be organized as soon as possible, in accordance with the commitments made by Egypt’s transition authorities.

In this context, France expects the Egyptian authorities to take all steps to ensure the safety of our nationals and our diplomatic and consular missions./.
