Statement by M. Laurent Fabius, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development
Paris, April 10, 2014

I greatly welcome this very important decision, the unanimous adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2149, which authorizes the deployment of a UN peacekeeping operation in the Central African Republic: MINUSCA. It is a success for peace and diplomacy. It supports the efforts of the transitional authorities to restore security and stability in the CAR.

MINUSCA should have up to 12,000 troops and will be able to draw on the support of the French and European contingents engaged alongside the African forces. It will also be tasked with supporting the process of national reconciliation, preparing elections between now and February 2015 and coming to the aid of the people.

France would like MINUSCA to be swiftly deployed on the ground./.
