Opening remarks were made by Sanya N. Younossi, vice president of the Aschiana Foundation, as well as French Ambassador Gérard Araud, who spoke about the key priorities of France and Afghanistan in their diplomatic relationship, most notably empowering women, which the ambassador said is "key to building strong economic and political relations" in Afghanistan. Mary Jo Myers, president of the Foundation, also spoke about Aschiana’s efforts to develop self-sustaining programs providing education, food and medical treatment to children affected by poverty and war in Afghanistan.

The gala featured a bazaar showcasing traditional Afghan products, such as jewelry, scarves and rugs, and guests had the opportunity to bid on items as part of a silent auction. In addition to Mrs. Ghani, a number of U.S. officials came out to show their support for Aschiana, including Joseph Dunford, Jr., newly-appointed chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Anita McBride, Executive-in-Residence at the Center for Congressional and Presidential Studies at American University, and James Cunningham, former U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan.
