Visit by Mrs Ségolène Royal on the occasion of the arrival of the frigate Hermione in the United States

The Minister of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy,will be visiting the United States from June 4 to 10 for the arrival of the frigate Hermione Lafayette and the preparation of the COP21 climate conference.

Arrival of the Hermione

The Minister will attend the welcoming ceremonies for the Hermione, Lafayette’s “freedom frigate,” on June 5 in Yorktown as a representative of the French Government and minister responsible for marine issues, and in her capacity as co-chair of the Comité National Hermione-La Fayette, as well as former president of the Poitou-Charentes region. Indeed, for 10 years she lent her support to the region’s reconstruction of this replica. She will also attend the ceremonies on June 9 at Mount Vernon, George Washington’s home.

Preparation of the COP21, energy transition and restoration of biodiversity

In Washington, the Minister will meet her counterparts, Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz and Environmental Protection Agency administrator Gina McCarthy; Senators Ed Markey, Barbara Boxer, Sheldon Whitehouse, and Brian Schatz of the Senate Climate Change Clearinghouse; and civil society actors involved in climate issues, including Marc Tercek, president of The Nature Conservancy. She will take part in the worldwide Planetary Debate on Climate Change on June 6 and the launch of Capitol Hill Ocean Week.

On June 8 in Montreal, the Minister will take part in the International Economic Forum of the Americas (with 3,500 delegates from the economic and financial sectors), a forum designed to contribute to the international discussion on the fight against climate disruption, the price of carbon, and sustainable development. There she will open the conference “Building a Balanced Economy.” During her trip, the Minister will also meet with Quebec Prime Minister Philippe Couillard.

- Wreath-laying ceremony at the Yorktown Victory Monument

- Ms. Royal, accompanied by the Ambassador, will lay a wreath at the foot of the monument commemorating the French and American soldiers who died in combat in October 1781

5 p.m.: Beginning of the Planetary Debate on Climate Change

Tuesday, June 9

10 a.m.: Participation in the launch of Capitol Hill Ocean Week

- Organizers: National Marine Sanctuary Foundation (NMSF) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)

- Participants: about 200 participants (Senators and Members of Congress, academics, scientists, NGOs, journalists)


- Meeting with the Senate Climate Change Clearinghouse

- In attendance: Senators Ed Markey, Barbara Boxer, Sheldon Whitehouse, and Brian Schatz.

Place: The Capitol

- Format: Introduction by Senator Ed Markey followed by a 10-minute speech by the Minister and a Q&A session
