Mr. Bruno Le Maire, Minister of Economy and Finance, and Mr. Philip Hammond, Chancellor of the Exchequer of the United Kingdom, met over a working lunch today, Thursday, July 27, 2017.
The two ministers discussed economic and financial issues of common interest to the two countries. Bruno Le Maire welcomed the intense bilateral economic relations between France and the UK, which are top-level trading partners. He again expressed a wish to maintain close cooperation between France and the UK.
Regarding Brexit, Bruno Le Maire emphasized the cohesion among the 27 member states and France’s full support for the European Commission’s negotiating team, led by Michel Barnier. He expressed the hope that the negotiations will go ahead in a constructive spirit.
The Minister also repeated that sufficient progress must be made on the withdrawal conditions, on the basis of the principles set out by the European Council, before discussions begin on defining the framework of the future relationship between the UK and the EU.
