Terrorist attack in Afghanistan

Letter from M. Nicolas Sarkozy, President of the Republic, to M. Hamid Karzai, President of Afghanistan
Paris, April 27, 2008

President Karzai, Dear Friend,

After the despicable attack which has just targeted in Kabul the Afghan authorities, including you yourself, I wanted personally to express to you France’s solidarity and support.

We utterly condemn this heinous act perpetrated by fanatics whose sole aim is to undermine the progress which, with the international community’s support, your country and its leaders are courageously striving to make on the road towards stabilization, reconstruction and democratization.

Building on the decisions I have recently taken to strengthen the French support for the Afghan forces in their battle against terrorism and barbarity, I want to assure you of France’s determined and constant commitment, at your side, to the pursuit of freedom and security for the Afghan people. The support conference we are jointly organizing on 12 June in Paris will be a potent moment when we come together around these shared objectives.

I would be grateful if you would convey to the bereaved and injured my feelings of deep sympathy, which are also those of the whole French nation.

(complimentary close)./.
