Communiqué issued by the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs.
Paris, May 30, 2008

At the request of the Afghan authorities, France will host on 12 June an international conference in support of Afghanistan, co-chaired by President Sarkozy, President Karzai and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. A dedicated Internet site has been set up for the event in conjunction with the Afghan authorities and the United Nations. It can be accessed in French and English at: www.diplomatie.gouv.fr/conference-afghanistan.

The site lists the main objectives of the conference which aims to reaffirm the international community’s commitment to the Afghan people, with the ambition in particular of the “Afghanization” of international aid, which Foreign and European Affairs Minister Bernard Kouchner spoke of at the International Civil Society and Private-Sector Forum in Paris on 24 May 2008.

In addition to the official statements and reference texts which frame the international community’s action in Afghanistan, the site also offers testimony in text and images of a country on the move in the face of political, economic and social challenges. At the end of the conference, the conclusions and the amount of the partners’ financial commitments will also be listed./.
